why should i learn improv now?

Life is inevitably stressful. Joy makes a great antidote!

Most people hear “improv” and think “comedy.” But there’s way more to it than that.

Skillful improvisation helps us meet all of life’s moments—and all that uncertainty—with greater freedom, ease, and confidence. We contribute more joyfully and respond more artfully. We get more resilient and more creative. We laugh more. Life gets better.

In these 6 weeks, you’ll learn:

  • how simple play can reawaken natural abilities to connect with others
  • revitalized access to your own spontaneity and creativity
  • techniques for sharing “yes, and” control with others–and with life itself!
  • simple stagecraft awareness to give you greater non-verbal presence and power
  • the first elements of building powerful stories

what makes this different from most improv courses?

This introduction to the world of improvisation will include many beloved games and exercises that teach the skills of spontaneity, curiosity, listening, and collaboration–you would find those in any good improv class.  Here, we’ll also draw from the wisdom of playful mindfulness to deepen the improv lessons we’re learning and apply them to life outside of class. You’ll come to see specifically how what we do on stage translates into what we do with our lives.

Formal and informal practices strengthen the awareness “muscle” so we tune more carefully into our stagemates.

Shared inquiry uses small and large group conversation to build a stronger sense of ensemble.

Playful exercises give us the chance to experience firsthand the skills we’re exploring—and to laugh while doing it.

Scaffolded lessons build our skills as we go, offering healthy challenge without veering into overwhelm or unhealthy anxiety.

Those who have taken Playful Mindfulness courses before will recognize the welcoming spirit of these lessons and will enjoy the opportunity to take on the delight and challenge of shared creation on the spot.

WHo is the course for?
